Bar Harbor, Maine -- Mice and humans share about 95 percent of their genes, and mice are recognized around the world as the leading experimental model for studying human biology and disease. But, says Jackson Laboratory Professor Gary Churchill, Ph.D., researchers can learn even more "now that we really know what a laboratory mouse is, genetically speaking."

Churchill and Fernando Pardo-Manuel de Villena, Ph.D., of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, leading an international research team, created a genome-wide, high-resolution map of most of the inbred mouse strains used today. Their conclusion, published in Nature Genetics: Most of the mice in use today represent only limited genetic diversity, which could be significantly expanded with the addition of more wild mouse populations.

The current array of laboratory mouse strains is the result of more than 100 years of selective breeding. In the early 20th century, America's first mammalian geneticists, including Jackson Laboratory founder Clarence Cook Little, sought to understand the genetic processes that lead to cancer and other diseases. Mice were the natural experimental choice as they breed quickly and prolifically and are small and easy to keep.

Lacking the tools of molecular genetics, those early scientists started by tracking the inheritance of physical traits such as coat color. A valuable source of diverse-looking mouse populations were breeders of "fancy mice," a popular hobby in Victorian and Edwardian England and America as well as for centuries in Asia.

In their paper, Churchill and Pardo-Manuel de Villena report that "classical laboratory strains are derived from a few fancy mice with limited haplotype diversity." In contrast, strains that were derived from wild-caught mice "represent a deep reservoir of genetic diversity," they write.

The team created an online tool, the Mouse Phylogeny Viewer, for the research community to access complete genomic data on 162 mouse strains. "The viewer provides scientists with a visual tool where they can actually go and look at the genome of the mouse strains they are using or considering, compare the differences and similarities between strains and select the ones most likely to provide the basis for experimental results that can be more effectively extrapolated to the diverse human population," said Pardo-Manuel de Villena.

"As scientists use this resource to find ways to prevent and treat the genetic changes that cause cancer, heart disease, and a host of other ailments, the diversity of our lab experiments should be much easier to translate to humans," he noted.

Churchill and Pardo-Manuel de Villena have been working for almost a decade with collaborators around the world to expand the genetic diversity of the laboratory mouse. In 2004 they launched the Collaborative Cross, a project to interbreed eight different strains--five of the classic inbred strains and three wild-derived strains. In 2009 Churchill's lab started the Diversity Outbred mouse population with breeding stock selected from the Collaborative Cross project.

The research team estimates that the standard laboratory mouse strains carry about 12 million single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), single-letter variations in the A, C, G or T bases of DNA. The Collaborative Cross mice deliver a whopping 45 million SNPs, as much as four times the genetic variation in the human population. "All these variants give us a lot more handles into understanding the genome," Churchill says.

"This work creates a remarkable foundation for understanding the genetics of the laboratory mouse, a critical model for studying human health," said James Anderson, Ph.D., who oversees bioinformatics grants at the National Institutes of Health. "Knowledge of the ancestry of the many strains of this invaluable model vertebrate will not only inform future experimentation but will allow a retrospective analysis of the huge amounts of data already collected."

Researchers in India have carried out a data mining exercise to determine which are the most important risk factors in increasing the chances of an individual suffering a heart attack. Writing in the International Journal of  Biomedical  Engineering and Technology, they confirm that the usual suspects high blood cholesterol, intake of alcohol and passive smoking play the most crucial role in "severe", "moderate" and "mild" cardiac risks, respectively.

Subhagata Chattopadhyay of the Camellia Institute of Engineering in Kolkata adds that being male aged between 48 and 60 years are exposed to severe and moderate risk by virtue of their age and gender respectively, whereas women over 50 years old are effected by mild risk in the absence of the other factors.

Medical prognosis is a highly subjective art as is determining risk for particular health events, such as heart attack. After all, clinical history, symptoms and signs rarely follow a linear path and their interpretation at the individual level by doctor does not usually conform to the rules of epidemiology - personal intuition, emotions, logic and experience all conspire to confound the conclusion drawn for each patient at a given time under a particular set of circumstances.

The use of computational data mining techniques that allow researchers to extract interesting and meaningful information from real-life clinical data could remove at least some aspect of the subjectivity of clinical prognosis and allow the epidemiology to work at the patient level more precisely. There have been data mining approaches tried before. However, they often have inherent problems in that the classification of the data for information retrieval is based on decision making learnt from examples set by doctors and so they incorporate the very subjectivity that Chattopadhyay hopes to avoid with his approach.

He has used 300 real-world sample patient cases with various levels of cardiac risk - mild, moderate and severe and mined the data based on twelve known predisposing factors: age, gender, alcohol abuse, cholesterol level, smoking (active and passive), physical inactivity, obesity, diabetes, family history, and prior cardiac event. He then built a risk model that revealed specific risk factors associated with heart attack risk.

"The essence of this work essentially lies in the introduction of clustering techniques instead of purely statistical modeling, where the latter has its own limitations in 'data-model fitting' compared to the former that is more flexible," Chattopadhyay explains. "The reliability of the data used, should be checked, and this has been done in this work to increase its authenticity. I reviewed several papers on epidemiological research, where I'm yet to see these methodologies, used."

Now what is distillation? Distillation definition is simply the purification or separation method, used not only for the purification of water, but also for the separation of individual components from the very complex mixtures on the industrial large scale.

This article is about what is distillation advantage for the water purification sector, so only the distillation definition and working criteria related to the purification of water will be discussed. Although there are number of different distillation techniques, but the driving principle (or working principle) of all of them is same, i.e. purification on the basis of the difference in boiling points of the components. The home water purification by boiling the water is the most common example of the simple distillation. On industrial scale, the water is boiled up to its boiling point; once the water reaches its boiling point, it starts evaporating and vaporizing, these evaporated water vapors are collected, and condensed with condensers, to get the pure water. Generally, people don't have enough idea about polymerization processes, or what benefits does polymerization offer in this high tech era. Polymerization can simply be explained as a chemical reaction, which occur between the smaller molecules and results in the larger molecules. Or in more technical terms, polymerization can be defined as a chemical process, in which lower molecular weight molecules (named as monomers for polymerization processes) react together to form higher molecular weight molecules (known as polymers).

Degree of polymerization is the term, which is used to calculate the number of monomers consumed to form the specific number of polymers, i.e. degree of polymerization is simply the ratio of the monomers to the polymers.

These monomers can either be homo-atoms (i.e. the molecules belong to the same group), or can be the hetero-atoms (i.e. different types of molecules – belongs to different groups). The polymerization process, which occurs between the homo-atoms, is known as addition polymerization, or chain growth polymerization; while the polymerization which occurs between the hetero-atoms based monomers is called as condensation polymerization or step growth polymerization.

The reason behind giving these names to the polymerization processes is very simple. In addition polymerization processes, the monomers usually are unsaturated homo-molecules (i.e. having extra inner linkages in forms of double or triple bonds), when the reaction starts, these extra inner bonds of monomers break and form chain like structures with other monomers in the process; which means that the number of atoms or molecules present as the reactants are same as those of the products, which is why, the empirical formula remains same on both sides of the reaction (reactants and products).

In condensation polymerization, hetero-atoms (i.e. different monomers – belong to different molecules) the monomers don't simply add up together. When the reaction starts, the smaller molecules leave the process (such as water molecules evaporates during the reaction), leaving condensed type process parameters; so, the amount or composition of polymerization product is not same as that of reactants, so the empirical formula of condensation polymers is not same as that of the monomers.

Polymerization process has great importance according to the recycling perspectives too. Many of the recyclable materials are produced with the help of any of the polymerization process. For an instance, plastic materials can be taken as perfect examples of the recyclable materials. Plastics can be produced with the help of polymerization processes.

The branch of Physics, which deals with the study of charges at rest, the forces between the static charges, electric fields and potentials due to these charges is called Electrostatics or Static Electricity or even Frictional Electricity.

The term 'electrostatics' means the charges are either stationary or move very slowly with respect to each other. In this chapter, we will study the charges, their effects on each other and on the surrounding charges. The discussion and determination of quantities like electric force, electric potential and electric field etc. will be important definitely at various points due to different kinds of charge distribution because various important conclusions can be drawn from their values. Charge distribution on a given body is very important for the measurement of above quantities. For example, charge distribution can be on a line, on a surface and on a 3-D body. It may be uniform and non-uniform also. According to the shape of the body, charge on the body, we can have various values of electric force, potential and field at a given point. It is very important to say that the values of above quantities are responsible for various phenomena.

The two types of charges i.e. positive and negative were chosen arbitrarily by Benjamin Franklin. In conductors, the electrons are loosely bound so it is easy to remove electrons by using friction method, say by rubbing a given conducting rod with some rough material. On the other hand, insulators do not lose electrons easily, hence it is easier to put charge on them to make them charged.

The various phenomenon of electrostatics find industrial applications. Some of them are electrostatic paint spraying, powder coating, flyash collection in chimneys, photocopying etc.

Many more uses of the electrostatics are given as below.

The electric field inside a hollow conductor is zero so electrical circuit can be saved from any external charge or electric field by keeping it in a hollow conductor. It is worth mentioning that electrostatic force is mechanical force and it is used to give kinetic energy to charge particles. In an atom nucleus exerts centripetal force on electrons and they revolve in circular orbits around the nucleus. The atom is stable because of constancy of this force between nucleus and electrons and keeps the electrons at a constant distance from the centre of the nucleus. Sparking also occurs due to the electrostatic force between the opposite charges. The electrostatic force is also a reason for binding atoms together, molecules together to form solids and even the human being is an assembly of a nuclei and electrons held together by this force. So hopefully I think, now you understand how important is this electrostatic force, which is a very strong force and roughly 1036 times stronger than the gravitational force.

We can still elaborate more interesting applications of various phenomena of electrostatics. For example, command signal was sent from earth to the space craft voyager-2 by the help of oscillating motion of electrons.

The Federal Reserve is one of the largest problems facing America today. The one question many people ask is what does a Federal Government Bank have to do with our nation's problems? For starters it is Federal in name only.

The Federal Reserve Bank is not part of the US Government. It is actually a privately owned corporation and international bank that was created by Congress in 1913. The passage of the 16th amendment was passed rather shadily, and according to some, illegally. Furthermore it was given the exclusive rights to 'print money' for the U.S. Government by Congress, during the Christmas break in 1913 when most of the representatives were on vacation.

Before the creation of the Federal Reserve the power and responsibility to print our nation's money was done by the Congress of the United States. Sadly since the time when the Federal Reserve was given the power to operate the printing press, the people of America have continually been charged interest on every dollar ever printed. This interest does not go to the Federal Government to benefit Government programs or pay down national debt. It goes directly to the 'cartel banking families' that own the Federal Reserve.

Furthermore the Federal Reserve is responsible for the continuous loss of purchasing power that the dollar has suffered for decades which was done by printing excess money. Since 1971 the US dollar has lost the backing of gold, now it's just created out of thin air. This excess money when added to the Americas money supply 'waters it down' making the total value of the currency weaker so you need more of it to buy something, this is called inflation. Here is the real kicker, the total sum of the United States national debt in all actuality, is the outstanding interest still owed to the Federal Reserve that the American people get stuck paying.

So what does the Federal Reserve do? Well their official roll other than money printing is also to provide a means that will control the amount of money that enters the economy. It is a fine balance that borders between an excess amount of currency creating inflation and not enough creating a recession. The Fed 'when acting responsibly' provides the counter balance to keep inflation and recession in check.

The Federal Reserve is a secretive collection of private banks that have Federal authority. They have no government control or oversight and are accountable to no one for their actions. They pretty much operate in secret keeping the money supply flowing steadily between the exceptionally rich, financial markets, banks and consumers. This is done while they react to both national and international political pressures. The Federal Reserve's meetings are always held in private where decisions are made without any outside input. These decisions ultimately and directly will affect the economic welfare of each person in the nation as a whole.

The Fed also incorporates other mechanisms or tools that can be put to use when necessary. One of the tools that will generate a great deal of attention has to do with the interest rates for banks in particular commercial banks. News of the Federal Reserve changing its interest rates always seems confusing even deceptive to many. However these rates will affect commercial banks which pay the Fed's rate to borrow money thus may or may not directly affect the consumer.

In summary America's biggest problem is actually the Federal Reserve itself. Our congress nearly 100 years ago sold America out by handing over great powers to the corrupt international banking elite, which in-turn have only compromised the well being of our entire economy. It is profit and power first that drive these 'international thieves'. The banking elite are an international group of bankers from several countries and none of them are from America. Therefore they have zero loyalty to American interests nor the American way of life. It is nationalism itself that hinders their business interests.

It was many years ago when one of our founding forefathers actually warned us about the dangers of private banks coming into power. But did we listen?
