What is the use of Network Monitoring?

What is the use of Network Monitoring - Tips to Monitor or Manage your Network

Author: rahul gupta

What is network monitoring?

The term 'network monitoring' can be defined by a system that ceaselessly monitors a network of computers for bad or slow constituents and informs network administrators about the situation via email or any other notifying system. It is an integral part of network management.

[caption id="attachment_1121" align="aligncenter" width="650"]What is the use of Network Monitoring? www.whatis.website-site.com-189 What is the use of Network Monitoring?[/caption]

Why is it important?

Availability is very important to measure the quality of a network today. If a network does not have problems, its availability would be 100 With the increasing need for such network availability it has become imperative for businesses to switch to more sound network monitoring solutions. The network administrator needs to anticipate problems. The network will fail at any point in time, and that's inevitable. The important thing is to become aware of the problem immediately and also know its cause in order to fix it quickly. Only monitoring the network continuously will ensure its uninterrupted availability and productivity.

 What is the current scenario?

Even today, there are computer networks that are not yet sufficiently monitored, in part because the interoperability between devices is handicapped by excessive protocols and incompatible interfaces. However, 'handicapped' does not imply an impossibility thanks to the advanced surveillance systems, and despite the limitations of old technology there is much hope for the near future. Current network monitoring systems integrate various technologies into a single control system and overcome the difficulties of yesteryear network management systems.

Why switch to network monitoring?

In a world where time is money, network failures can significantly reduce the productivity of a business. Network monitoring systems do not prevent problems but report them at the shortest notice. Since the whole process is automated there is little room for a false alarm. In network systems which incorporate tens and hundreds of computer devices, one cannot afford the luxury of looking for a problem manually. The issue has to be reported immediately so that it can be fixed in quick time before the problem is aggravated. With remote access features it has become all the more convenient for network administrators to fix issues with minimum delay once they have been reported. Real-time monitoring nullifies the need for carrying out manual checks on backups, antivirus applications, event logs, hard disk space and so on.

 Benefits

The benefits of an integrated monitoring system are listed below:

  • Increase in the reliability of systems and equipment

  • Rapid diagnosis of events

  • Greater flexibility in the operational handling, maintenance and reconnection

  • Improved response time

  • High degree of flexibility for future extensions

  • Reduced costs of operation and maintenance

  • Prediction of potential problems in real time

 Conclusion

The current competitive scenario of the market has forced companies to embark on a constant search for greater efficiency, better supply quality and lower costs. This context has led to a change in the maintenance philosophy, accelerating the shift to more dependable network monitoring systems. Network management systems have thus adopted network monitoring as one of the main tools to cope with this change without jeopardizing the safety and reliability of operating systems, while predicting and diagnosing potential problems.

What is a laboratory mouse?

What is a laboratory mouse? Jackson, UNC researchers reveal the details

Bar Harbor, Maine -- Mice and humans share about 95 percent of their genes, and mice are recognized around the world as the leading experimental model for studying human biology and disease. But, says Jackson Laboratory Professor Gary Churchill, Ph.D., researchers can learn even more "now that we really know what a laboratory mouse is, genetically speaking."

[caption id="attachment_751" align="aligncenter" width="500"]What is a laboratory mouse? What-is-188 What is a laboratory mouse?[/caption]

Churchill and Fernando Pardo-Manuel de Villena, Ph.D., of the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, leading an international research team, created a genome-wide, high-resolution map of most of the inbred mouse strains used today. Their conclusion, published in Nature Genetics: Most of the mice in use today represent only limited genetic diversity, which could be significantly expanded with the addition of more wild mouse populations.

The current array of laboratory mouse strains is the result of more than 100 years of selective breeding. In the early 20th century, America's first mammalian geneticists, including Jackson Laboratory founder Clarence Cook Little, sought to understand the genetic processes that lead to cancer and other diseases. Mice were the natural experimental choice as they breed quickly and prolifically and are small and easy to keep.

Lacking the tools of molecular genetics, those early scientists started by tracking the inheritance of physical traits such as coat color. A valuable source of diverse-looking mouse populations were breeders of "fancy mice," a popular hobby in Victorian and Edwardian England and America as well as for centuries in Asia.

In their paper, Churchill and Pardo-Manuel de Villena report that "classical laboratory strains are derived from a few fancy mice with limited haplotype diversity." In contrast, strains that were derived from wild-caught mice "represent a deep reservoir of genetic diversity," they write.

The team created an online tool, the Mouse Phylogeny Viewer, for the research community to access complete genomic data on 162 mouse strains. "The viewer provides scientists with a visual tool where they can actually go and look at the genome of the mouse strains they are using or considering, compare the differences and similarities between strains and select the ones most likely to provide the basis for experimental results that can be more effectively extrapolated to the diverse human population," said Pardo-Manuel de Villena.

"As scientists use this resource to find ways to prevent and treat the genetic changes that cause cancer, heart disease, and a host of other ailments, the diversity of our lab experiments should be much easier to translate to humans," he noted.

Churchill and Pardo-Manuel de Villena have been working for almost a decade with collaborators around the world to expand the genetic diversity of the laboratory mouse. In 2004 they launched the Collaborative Cross, a project to interbreed eight different strains--five of the classic inbred strains and three wild-derived strains. In 2009 Churchill's lab started the Diversity Outbred mouse population with breeding stock selected from the Collaborative Cross project.

The research team estimates that the standard laboratory mouse strains carry about 12 million single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), single-letter variations in the A, C, G or T bases of DNA. The Collaborative Cross mice deliver a whopping 45 million SNPs, as much as four times the genetic variation in the human population. "All these variants give us a lot more handles into understanding the genome," Churchill says.

"This work creates a remarkable foundation for understanding the genetics of the laboratory mouse, a critical model for studying human health," said James Anderson, Ph.D., who oversees bioinformatics grants at the National Institutes of Health. "Knowledge of the ancestry of the many strains of this invaluable model vertebrate will not only inform future experimentation but will allow a retrospective analysis of the huge amounts of data already collected."
###

Other team members include Hyuna Yang, Ph.D., from The Jackson Laboratory; Leonard McMillan, Ph.D., two graduate students Jeremy Wang and Catherine Welsh from the UNC-Chapel Hill Department of Computer Science; Timothy Bell, Ryan Buus and graduate student John Didion from the UNC-Chapel Hill Department of Genetics, UNC Lineberger and the Carolina Center for Genome Sciences; Francois Bonhomme, Ph.D., and Pierre Boursot, Ph.D., from the Université Montpellier (France); Alex Yu, Ph.D., from the National Taiwan University; Michael Nachman, Ph.D., from the University of Arizona; Jaroslav Pialek, Ph.D., from the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic, and Priscilla Tucker, Ph.D., from the University of Michigan.

The research was supported by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (part of the National Institutes of Health), and several additional National Institutes of Health grants, a Czech Science Foundation grant and a University of North Carolina Bioinformatics and Computational Biology training grant.

What is Modernism?

What is Modernism?

Author: Jyoti Bhusal

Modernism is a time in our history when traditional values began to change and literature became an outlet for the troubled and rebellious souls. Modernism attempted to rethink science, art, culture, ethics, philosophy and psychology. It attempted to the find new or hidden meaning in the human experience and had to deal with coming to terms with new ideas.

[caption id="attachment_741" align="aligncenter" width="440"]What is Modernism? What-is-186 What is Modernism?Piccaso Art - Ma Jolie [/caption]

Actually, the word ‘modernism' refers to the characteristics of the modern time and it is a new thought or practice which is called as modernism. Time after the 20th century, the modernism deliberated departure from tradition to modern. Modernism is a artistic and cultural movement with its roots in mid-19th century France, generally defined by new forms of art, architecture, music and literature emerging in the decades before 1914 as artists rejected 19th century artistic traditions such as romanticism.

Modernity actually refers to the modern age. It is the changed world, everything is changed from traditional to modern; traditional culture changed to modern culture. After Second World War the concept of modernism developed, reengineering, change, such term aroused. Firstly Europe culture entered in to the modernity, the style, living standard everything changed. We can give the example of fashion; it's also an important part of the modernity.

Modernism changed in every area, such as culture, fashion, industry, business. It gave opportunities to investors, engineers and designers and also provided the employment opportunities. It has a disadvantage too, it made people lazy, I mean people wants more facilities. Computer age made people not more creative.

From the above discussion we can summarize the term modernism;

1.As a term modernism refers to an experimental style of visual arts, literature and music.
2. Modernist work are often called avant-grade or unconventional and are preoccupied with formal issued rather than content
3. Several factors that contribute to Modernism are the losses of certainty and optimism in human progress and anxiety about future.

What is electrostatics?

What is electrostatics?

Author:Neeraj Kathuria

The branch of Physics, which deals with the study of charges at rest, the forces between the static charges, electric fields and potentials due to these charges is called Electrostatics or Static Electricity or even Frictional Electricity.

[caption id="attachment_724" align="aligncenter" width="450"]What is electrostatics? What-is-183 What is electrostatics?[/caption]

The term 'electrostatics' means the charges are either stationary or move very slowly with respect to each other. In this chapter, we will study the charges, their effects on each other and on the surrounding charges. The discussion and determination of quantities like electric force, electric potential and electric field etc. will be important definitely at various points due to different kinds of charge distribution because various important conclusions can be drawn from their values. Charge distribution on a given body is very important for the measurement of above quantities. For example, charge distribution can be on a line, on a surface and on a 3-D body. It may be uniform and non-uniform also. According to the shape of the body, charge on the body, we can have various values of electric force, potential and field at a given point. It is very important to say that the values of above quantities are responsible for various phenomena.

The two types of charges i.e. positive and negative were chosen arbitrarily by Benjamin Franklin. In conductors, the electrons are loosely bound so it is easy to remove electrons by using friction method, say by rubbing a given conducting rod with some rough material. On the other hand, insulators do not lose electrons easily, hence it is easier to put charge on them to make them charged.

The various phenomenon of electrostatics find industrial applications. Some of them are electrostatic paint spraying, powder coating, flyash collection in chimneys, photocopying etc.

Many more uses of the electrostatics are given as below.

The electric field inside a hollow conductor is zero so electrical circuit can be saved from any external charge or electric field by keeping it in a hollow conductor. It is worth mentioning that electrostatic force is mechanical force and it is used to give kinetic energy to charge particles. In an atom nucleus exerts centripetal force on electrons and they revolve in circular orbits around the nucleus. The atom is stable because of constancy of this force between nucleus and electrons and keeps the electrons at a constant distance from the centre of the nucleus. Sparking also occurs due to the electrostatic force between the opposite charges. The electrostatic force is also a reason for binding atoms together, molecules together to form solids and even the human being is an assembly of a nuclei and electrons held together by this force. So hopefully I think, now you understand how important is this electrostatic force, which is a very strong force and roughly 1036 times stronger than the gravitational force.

We can still elaborate more interesting applications of various phenomena of electrostatics. For example, command signal was sent from earth to the space craft voyager-2 by the help of oscillating motion of electrons.

A host of other phenomena and effects of electric field can be invented. We will not miss to highlight some of them, which have already been invented. For example, a shark can detect the weak electric field produced by the flatfish even if the latter is hiding itself by burrowing into the bottom soil. Similarly, the presence of human beings in water can be detected by shark because any scratch on the human body produces weak electric field.

We can even make the surrounding air conducting by a strong electric field and this is called electric break down or electrical discharge. Very interesting it is to observe the sparks in the air surrounding a charged metal cap. This is due to ionisation of the surroundings air. It happens only if the strength of the electric field is too large. In the beginning it has been rightly said that strength of the electric field matters so this example is very correct to explain the effect of electric field.

In industry also electric field finds beautiful uses. For example, when electric field exerts a force on charged ash in electrostatic precipitator then the ash is collected in the stack and not allowed to go out in the atmosphere and pollute it. This is how the electrostatic force can prevent the atmosphere from pollution. We can still go on telling more and more examples of the uses of electrostatics. The brilliant display in the sky stretching over few kilometers and delivering around 1000 amperes of current from clouds to the earth is a fine example of the strong electrostatic force between the oppositely charged particles. The overhead cloud system creates strong electric field near our heads and our hair strands extended along the field. Don't you understand that the above examples are based on the effects of charges at rest or in slow motion.

Capacitor is a wonderful device, which has been devised by the basic principle of electrostatics. It is used in almost all electronic equipments like oscillators, amplifiers, rectifiers, modulators, demodulators, calculators and definitely in computers. It is a device, which is used to help a patient suffering from ventricular fibrillation (a kind of heart attack). The heart muscles are given shocks by 20 A of current which transfers about 200 joules of energy in about 2 mile seconds. A special electronic circuit greatly increases the potential difference of capacitor there by increasing the electrical energy of the capacitor. This is really a wonderful application of electrostatics.

Thanks to the scientists who really did so well in initiating endless efforts for making this branch of physics so applicative and so important. To wind it up I would say this branch of physics is only the game which positive and negative charges play sitting on various bodies in different postures and spreading their influence in atmosphere, industries, research etc.

What is Automated Translation?

What is Automated Translation?

Author:ajax

Language is foundational to an enterprise's longevity and success in today's global market. The first concern of any enterprise looking to expand its global footprint must revolve around how to utilize language technology and use this innovation to communicate their corporate services and products. One of the most important obstacles in global communication is the lexical differences in languages. Hence, language translation is necessary for communicating in foreign languages. Unless and until the foreign customers infer the meaning of the marketing messages correctly, there is less than one percent chance of their buying it. Therefore, in order to gain foothold in foreign markets, enterprises need to translate content into different languages in near real time. This is easily possible through automated translation. But, what is automated translation?

[caption id="attachment_1105" align="aligncenter" width="630"]What is Automated Translation? www.whatis.website-site.com-174 What is Automated Translation?[/caption]

Automated translation is the translation of text by a computer, with no human involvement. Pioneered in the 1950's, automated translation is also referred to as machine translation, automatic translation, or instant translation. Automated translation helps enterprises to communicate with customers in the right channel, in the right language and at the right time.

Automation translation systems are of two types namely,rule-based and statistical. A rule-based system uses a combination of language and grammar rules, together with dictionaries of common words to generate a translation.

While statistical systems learn rules automatically by analyzing large amounts of data for each language combination. These systems can be trained for specific industries or companies using additional data relevant to the domain.

Automated translation delivers benefits in several ways:

Accelerates Human Translation Productivity - It speeds up human translation productivity by providing an initial translation for human post-editing to deliver translated content faster.

Improves Customer Service and Satisfaction -It makes content easily accessible to global customers to improve customer service and satisfaction – with on-demand translation of support knowledge base content, cross-language chat, and multilingual email support.

Supports More Languages in Quick Time - It helps to grow revenue from new markets by supporting more languages in quick time.

Enhances Employee Collaboration - It improves employee collaboration by helping employees understand non-native language communication (like emails, documents and websites) through a general ('gist') translation.

Thus, automated translation accelerates global communication to support new market expansion, deliver a positive customer experience, and enable instant access to information in a user's preferred language.

The internet driven technological revolution has altered the way businesses function and have left a deep impact on the global economy. With more tech-savvy customers to serve, business enterprises are faced by challenges to meet the expectation of every individual customer so as to stay successful and relevant within the globally competitive landscape.

Languages are the medium of communication and translation is the process of communicating the meaning of a source language text to a target language text. Translation came into existence after written literature came into use and human translators with their spill-over of source language idiom and usage play a major role in the way most of the languages have been shaped.

What is a Representational Mass Reality?

What is a Representational Mass Reality? A Very Short Introduction

By Henry M. Piironen

The individual's sense of reality is representational, and it can even be said that all human experiences are representations, thus forming a representational reality in parallel with the physical reality. The contents of the representational reality are founded on the interpretations of the environment and on such responses as emotions. But what can we then call as the representational mass reality?

[caption id="attachment_1047" align="aligncenter" width="500"]What is a Representational Mass Reality? www.whatis.website-site.com-155 What is a Representational Mass Reality?[/caption]

Consider a group of people in a kick ass metal concert. Each of them receives the representational content of the environment after a content generative cycle to their conscious mind, and as the source of the photons the retina receives is relatively the same, depending on the co-ordinates the persons are in, by combining the individual representational senses of the environment together, we are perceiving a representational mass reality. In such a domain, the metal star is under parallel perceptions of hundreds of individuals at the same time, their music stimulating each of their brains.

The representational mass reality of humanity is composed of every individual existing. Their combined whole defines the reality of Earth in contemporary terms, and the forms the reality takes comes to existence through every individual, whether in isolation or not. All persons have also an influence over the emerging forms of the future, and all actions taken lead for the casualties to be bind into increasingly more effects through the butterfly effect the further in time they exceed, if the cultural continuum doesn't meet such a terrific fate as a holocaust. The greater the influence during the brief existence, the greater effect, but it is enough to feel valuable from one's mere being, for in this too the ungreedy equally exist.

Humanity is also joined together by the use of the same words, however well defined they might between individual and another. The words in themselves are in case of substantives, adjectives and verbs names of a variety of phenomena, and the descriptive level of them in the dictionaries are the general descriptions of the phenomena. If one were to count the amount of same words an individual uses during one day, one would realize how much over the same matters the mind goes through daily. In the level of the representational mass reality, when everyone has an influence over it, the artistry and the responsibility is in that what should the reality be like? What should an individual's life be like, and what should the reality of consciousness in general be like in mass level? The contents of it, the richness of the experience one can for example receive from art, and literature. Considering the virtual reality of forums, why should an individual load it with so utter negativity, for similarly as individuals on a metal concert receive the contents of the co-ordinates they occupy, the contents of the consciousness in such a mass reality as forums will also be under parallel perceptions in mass level? In reality, the reality is what you make of it.

What is a Book Review Service?

What is a Book Review Service?

By Michelle Spoils

A book review service will help you get the word out about your book and hopefully make others want to read it. If you look at top novels, you will notice that there are usually quotes from reviews from publications from the New York Times or other papers. This often happens with noted authors that have books published in large publishing houses. But how does the new author who has perhaps self published or is published with a very small publishing house get noticed? Very often, they use a book review service.

[caption id="attachment_1042" align="aligncenter" width="500"]What is a Book Review Service? www.whatis.website-site.com-154 What is a Book Review Service?[/caption]

As you know, an increasing number of books are now sold online. This goes for movies and music as well. And most of the online websites that offer books also encourage book reviews. There are several places online where you can review books.

A book review service will read the book and then give an honest review of the book in various places online. These will be posted and may help you promote your book. While it is a nice idea to rely on those who read the book to actually post a review, people do not always do this. As a matter of fact, it is rare for the average person, even when prompted, to write a book review. Most of the book reviews that you see online are the result of a book review service.

A book review service will not just say that the book is good, but why. This is done in a way without giving away the ending of the book. The purpose of the book review service is to get others to want to buy the book. If you are trying to promote a book using the internet, the use of a book review service really makes sense. It may end up costing you a few dollars to promote your book in this manner, but it will work out for you in the end. A book review service is one of the best routes you can take if you are a new author trying to get others to read your book.

Using a book review service is similar to any other type of marketing. The marketing technique of the bandwagon effect is in force when it comes to book reviews. This is the concept that others will want something if they know that other people like it. It is a very old and very effective form of marketing and is used in all forms of advertising. Using a book review service is a way that you can market your book to the general public without it seeming like an ad.

What is a Book Reviewer?

What is a Book Reviewer?

By Michelle Spoils

A book reviewer is not always a professional person who reads books for a living and then reviews them in articles. Today, anyone can review books both online or at your local bookstore or library. Most book stores and libraries are looking for individuals to help them sell certain books. In such cases, you would not be paid for the book review but might, in the case of the book store, be presented with a copy of the book for free.

[caption id="attachment_1039" align="aligncenter" width="500"]What is a Book Reviewer? www.whatis.website-site.com-153 What is a Book Reviewer?[/caption]

The job of a book reviewer is to read the book and then comment on it. Comments should be as specific as possible without giving away the ending of the book or too much information. Positive comments should make the reader want to pick up the book and buy it. In most cases, negative book reviews will not be used in bookstores that are trying to sell books.

In addition to being a reader for a library or bookstore, you can also be an online book reviewer. Such individuals also do not get paid. They simply read books and then give a review of what they read in a brief review online. Unfortunately, there is no pay for doing this, although if you continue to review books long enough, you might be considered to be a good book reviewer and develop a following.

Anyone reviewing many books has a following of those who admire his or her opinions when it comes to books that are being read by the reviewer. The more noted the reviewer becomes, the more followed his or her opinions will be and the more authors will try to get this individual to read his or her book.

There are also book reviewers who go over unpublished works for publishing houses. They usually will recommend that a book be published to one of the publishers. They are also called readers. In order to get a job like this, you usually have a degree in writing or literature as this is often a stepping stone for some writers to take.

If you like to read, you may enjoy reviewing books. The more you build up a reputation, the more people will look forward to your book reviews. One way to do this is to review books that you have read on various websites and get your name out there to the general public. You can become a noted book reviewer, thanks to the internet, even if you are not getting paid to do this service.

What is Gratitude Meditation?

What is Gratitude Meditation?

By Himanshu Jakhar

Gratitude meditation is a focused meditation exercise. It is a way to express your thanks for the special skills and talents you have, the people in your life, and the many blessings you have received. In sum, all of those things that make your life special are worthy of your gratitude. This practice can be used alongside your regular meditation sessions, or you can devote an entire session to gratitude at regular intervals.

[caption id="attachment_998" align="aligncenter" width="500"]What is Gratitude Meditation? www.whatis.website-site.com-140 What is Gratitude Meditation?[/caption]

This is one of the most rewarding types of meditation, because it teaches you to be happy with everything you have. You learn how to move from wanting, to feeling content and blissful with what you already have. Instead of troubling yourself by thinking of all that you don't have, you can instead focus your energy on being thankful for everything you do have. When you do so, you will actually attract more wealth.

You can start your gratitude meditation practice by first choosing a suitable place that is free of distractions. Avoid places with bright lighting. Turn off your cell phone and try to disconnect for a little while. Start by closing your eyes and focusing on your breathing. Identify the thoughts or worries that enter your head and dismiss them. Don't get angry at yourself if your mind continues to wander; that is the natural habit of the mind. Instead, get back on track by focusing on nothingness. When your body is in a state of relaxation and your mind is calm, you can begin to go over all of the things you are thankful for. You can use generic gratitude affirmations to express your thanks, or you can individualize your practise by thinking of specific things that you are thankful for in your life.

It can be easy to overlook even some of the most basic things to be thankful for. Take your body, for instance. You have eyes that allow you to see the world, you have ears that enable you to listen to music and hear the words of others, and you a mouth that lets you express your truths to others. There is so much more that your body alone can do that you should be thankful for. There are people in your life, and there is beauty in the world. There are endless things to be grateful for.

Practicing gratitude meditation on a regular basis is the best way to move towards happiness. Why? Because unhappiness is actually characterized as a state of desire or want. When you move out of that state by focusing on recognizing the blessings that you do have, you can move towards contentment. It becomes possible for you to understand that you don't actually need material possessions or any of the other things you desire in life, to be happy. Gratitude meditation is one of the simplest ways to teach yourself to be happy and experience fulfillment in the absence of desire.

What is Brand Credibility?

What is Brand Credibility?

By Effi N. Hatcher

Brand credibility is usually pointed out by marketing specialists as one psychological element that could trigger the purchasing reaction of consumers. Nevertheless, just like with any type of triggers, it can create a positive or negative effect. In this case, it relates to your brand's reputation and its capability (or incapacity) to convert that into sales.

[caption id="attachment_996" align="aligncenter" width="665"]What is Brand Credibility? www.whatis.website-site.com-137 What is Brand Credibility?[/caption]

As a company owner, you must try to change your mindset into that of the consumers. Try to realize how you would perceive various companies and how it affects your purchasing choices. Most often, consumers would opt for those businesses that are deemed to be experts in their respective industries.

Other elements that affect your purchasing patterns would include longevity, which includes the years that a company has been in existence. This shows their mass appeal and quality of their service or product given that it has been favored by a certain demographic and for that given period. This is what credibility in branding is about: the perception that people have of your business or company.

Building Credibility

Now that you understand what brand credibility is, you must face the tougher question: how do you build it? This is even more difficult for business newbies or business startups because there is a lot of work to be done. Aside from that, you need to continuously feed it so as to be able to maintain that credibility that you have built up for your business.

Credibility is the center of every business. Even though you provide quality products or services, if your customers perceive your business as incapable of offering such level of quality, then it would be of no use. It would not be able to verify your business as a reliable choice among several possible competing choices in the market.

To create brand credibility, you need to meet up with the following categories:

• Non-verbal such as your logo or image,

• Verbal efforts through marketing or advertising,

• Mission and Vision of the business to reflect your organization's values,

• and, Central operations that is crucial in delivering your guarantees to the customer.

Following are tips on how you can build credibility towards success.

Customer Perceptions

You build this initially by doing business that satisfies your customer. When you make advertising campaign claims about your product or service, you need to meet or exceed their expectation standards to be able to build that positive perception about your business. First impressions always last, so you need to make a good first impression if you want to increase market share.

What is Dry Cleaning?

What is Dry Cleaning?

By Jerry Saddington

Ever wondered how fabrics and clothes are actually cleaned at the Dry Cleaners? How do they manage it without getting the clothes wet? Well actually they don't. The name comes from the fact that the dry cleaning process doesn't use any water. The items being cleaned are actually immersed in a liquid solvent that does the job without the need of water to help carry away the dirt and grime, as happens with the washing we all do at home.

[caption id="attachment_984" align="aligncenter" width="500"]What is Dry Cleaning? www.whatis.website-site.com-133 What is Dry Cleaning?[/caption]

So let's take a look at how the process actually works.

Dry Cleaning Solvent

Modern dry cleaning has been around for just over 200 years, and early dry cleaners used a number of solvents to do the cleaning, including petrol and kerosene. Developments in the chemical industry over the last 75 years led to the development of a number of synthetic solvents, some of which were quite dangerous to work with, but they all eventually gave way to a chemical known as perchlorethylene, generally known as just "perc". It is safer, works more effectively and takes less time to do the job than its' predecessors and so has become universally used throughout the industry.

Dry Cleaning Machines

The actual cleaning takes place in a machine not unlike a domestic combined washer/tumble dryer. They are larger than your machine at home and, depending on the particular machine, hold up to around 45kg. The clothes are placed in perforated drum and throughout the cleaning cycle the drum rotates and the solvent washes in through the drum and around the fabrics, lifting and removing dirt and stains. The machine also includes filters that allow the solvent to be cleaned and recycled many times, so unlike a domestic machine which pumps the dirty water away into the drains every wash, a dry cleaning machine is far more economical and eco-friendly as it drains far fewer solvents into the environment.

The final cycles spin the fabrics to expel and remaining solvent, and then tumble dries them with warm air.

Finishing

Once the clothes and fabrics have been through the actual dry cleaning machines, they are pressed to put them in to the pristine condition we all expect when we collect our items.

The steps involved in achieving the desired finish include:

Applying steam to soften the fabric

Removing the steam using compressed air or a vacuum

Re-shaping a garment with quick drying

Pressing the garment

Pre Treatment and Post Treatment of Stains

Like all cleaning processes, Dry Cleaning has its limits and there are some stains that the normal cleaning cycle won't shift. When items are taken in to the dry cleaners the staff will inspect them to try to spot such stains, and again after the cleaning a final check will be carried out to spot any that are still there. Where these stains are spotted, other stronger solvents will be applied directly to the stain which will remove the vast majority. There are of course some stains which just can't be removed however hard the cleaners may try, and these would include bleached spots or tanin stains that have set in over time.

What is Asbestos?

What is Asbestos : What are the dangers of asbestos and where can it be found in the home? Information on what to do if asbestos is found in the home and how it should be removed.

[caption id="attachment_970" align="aligncenter" width="413"]What is Asbestos? www.whatis.website-site.com-128 What is Asbestos?[/caption]

The Dangers of Asbestos

Author:Asbestos Removal Expert

Asbestos is now completely banned in the UK, but it was widely used as a building material from the 1950's until the mid 1980's and it can be found in buildings constructed as recently as 2000.

In the home, asbestos was commonly used for lagging pipes, in insulation boards and mixed with other materials to make roof and floor tiles. It was also a popular choice for garages and other outbuildings.

It was banned because it was recognised to be a serious health hazard, and it is now responsible for about 4000 deaths each year and many cases of debilitating illness. Today, the people most at risk are those whose work brings them into direct contact with asbestos such as builders, heating engineers, roofers and demolition workers.

The danger comes from microscopic asbestos fibres that become airborne when asbestos, or a material containing asbestos, is disturbed or damaged. If large numbers of these fibres are breathed in they can remain undetected in the lungs, usually for more than 20 years, before causing serious lung diseases including asbestosis, lung cancer and mesothelioma, a cancer that affects the membranes covering the lungs.

What should you do if you find asbestos in your home?

The most important thing is to leave it alone. If the asbestos is in good condition, normally hidden from view, and not likely to be accidentally damaged it won't pose an immediate danger. But if you need to disturb it, perhaps to carry out repairs or alterations, the safest option is to get it removed. Not all asbestos is easily recognisable so if you come across any material that you are not certain about treat it as though it is asbestos unless an expert tells you otherwise.

How can you get asbestos removed?

Some types of asbestos, including asbestos lagging, sprays and coatings must only be removed by an asbestos removal contractor licensed by the Health and Safety Executive. If you want to remove a less dangerous type of asbestos yourself it will need to be sealed in strong, clearly labelled plastic bags and disposed of at a waste site licensed to accept asbestos. For your own protection you are strongly advised to wear disposable clothing and a suitable dust mask. It's also important to keep any dust to a minimum and to isolate the work area so asbestos fibres cannot contaminate other parts of your home. If you have any doubts about your ability to do this it will probably be safer to call in a reputable asbestos removal contractor.

How can you find a specialist asbestos removal company?

For any type of domestic asbestos removal only use an approved contractor who is licensed by the Health and Safety Executive. To save time and wasted phone calls get an online asbestos removal quote from a website that does the checks for you and only deals with approved contractors.

What is Vitamin D and What are the Benefits?

What is Vitamin D and what are the Benefits?

Author:Mehboob Talukdar

Vitamin D is a steroid vitamin that encourages the absorption and metabolism of calcium and phosphorous. If you are exposed to normal levels of sunlight then you will not need vitamin D Supplements as sunlight promoted vitamin D synthesis in the skin. A human requires 10 to 15 minutes in the sun at least twice a week on the face, back, hands or arms without sunscreen with a greater than 3 UV index to get adequate amounts of vitamin D.

[caption id="attachment_955" align="aligncenter" width="500"]What is Vitamin D and What are the Benefits? www.whatis.website-site.com-123 What is Vitamin D and What are the Benefits?[/caption]

Vitamin D has a number of important functions. One of them being it helps to regulate the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body. These are the nutrients that are needed to keep teeth and bones healthy. When a person is suffering from a vitamin D deficiency it can lead to bone deformities such as rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults which causes bone pain and tenderness. Our main source of vitamin D is the sunlight on our skin. Vitamin D is made by our body under the skin in reaction to summer sunlight. Good food sources for vitamin D are:

  • oily fish, such as salmon and sardines

  • eggs

  • fortified fat spreads

  • fortified breakfast cereals

  • powdered milk

We need vitamin D for a number of reasons. It is an immune system regulator and is an important way to arm the immune system against ailments like the common cold. It may also reduce the risks of developing multiple sclerosis and according to Dennis Bourdette, the chairman of the Department of Neurology and director of Multiple Sclerosis and Neuroimmunology Centre at Oregon Health and Science University, multiple sclerosis is much less common the nearer you get to the tropics where there is a lot more sunlight.

Vitamin D may also play a role in helping the brain to keep working later on in life and could also be linked to maintaining a healthy body weight. Researchers at Harvard Medical School found that vitamin D can help to reduce the severity and frequency of asthma symptoms and also reduce the number of hospitalisations due to asthma.

Other benefits of vitamin D are the reduction in the risk of developing rheumatoid arthritis in women, protection against damage from low levels of radiation, lower risks of developing cancer and it can also help with the recovery process from tuberculosis.

If you find that your body is not producing enough vitamin D because you do not have sufficient sunlight exposure you will need to take supplements or change your diet so you can obtain if from food. Elderly people as well as people with darker skin should take extra vitamin D to maintain good health.

What is the durability of the plumbing of a building?

What is the durability of the plumbing of a building? What is the best material for hydraulic lines?

Author:cleber

Who lives in an old apartment building knows how common are the apportionments to exchange extra pipe. Nothing more normal because the pipes have a life span which may be greater or smaller depending on the type of material and conditions of use. But how long? What materials to use? See this analysis of various types of materials, with its pros and cons.

[caption id="attachment_942" align="aligncenter" width="500"]What is the durability of the plumbing of a building? www.whatis.website-site.com-119 What is the durability of the plumbing of a building?[/caption]

The durability of pipes in use in buildings depends on a number of factors, whose estimation is difficult to be done accurately. Among these factors are:

• Nature of material of pipe and fittings - PVC, PPT, copper, galvanized steel or cast iron,
• Type of joint - solder, with thread sealant, heat fusion, fusion adhesive solvent, elastic rubber ring,
• Exposure conditions - embedded in masonry, mortar underlayment within the slab, installation with and without apparent incidence of solar radiation, subjection to thermal shock, entry drives and accommodations structural, cyclical swings subjection to internal pressure,
• Chemical nature and temperature of the fluid transported by the pipeline - chlorinated drinking water, hot water, wastewater, stormwater and other.

The drinking water provided by the urban network in certain locations may have dissolved mineral salts that show aggressive to certain materials pipes, contributing to the reduction of life. This is the case for high concentrations of carbonates and bicarbonates of calcium and magnesium, and also occur when chlorides, oxygen and chlorine free, present in small concentrations.

These components are shown aggressive over time, for example, carbon steel galvanized pipes. Two tubes of this material, of the same brand and same manufacturing batch, durability may have lead to different saline water with different natures, for example, 18 years of life in the mountain region of Rio de Janeiro and only 8 years in Curitiba and metropolitan area.

However, there is galvanized carbon steel pipes whose use in Curitiba is already 25 years old and still perform well. This was the case of Residential Condominium Iguacu, object of a technical report of my own, Eng Sergio Frederick Gnipper whose pipes of cold water, originally galvanized steel, were in satisfactory use for almost 40 years and only recently have shown obsolescence, requiring complete replacement.

The explanation for this particular case is in good quality and thickness of the protective layer of zinc applied hot (so-called galvanic) in these pipes, and the natural formation of an outer layer of protective and insulating zinc oxide, whitish appearance, which isolated the external surfaces of the pipe from direct contact with the masonry mortar or plaster of aggressive chemical nature.

One factor that dramatically accelerates the degradation of carbon steel pipes and galvanized malleable iron galvanized connections is called 'galvanic couple' or 'galvanic cell'. When these materials are placed in direct contact with another metal tube of very diverse in nature electrochemical presence of water (such as copper, for example), there arises a weak electric current of low voltage in the region of contact of dissimilar metals, as occurs with a cell or battery electric. This process causes chemical reactions of degradation of less noble metal, causing premature corrosion and accelerated the galvanized pipe.

When possible, a resource to prevent galvanic corrosion in metallic tubes is bringing an insulating layer of nonconductive material between different metals. This is the case of a strip of flexible rubber placed on the support of a copper tube support in galvanized carbon steel.

Due to the extreme variability of materials and exposure conditions, it is also difficult to assess the economic period of useful life of the pipes of a building, the words, the maximum time recommended for use in staying in the building. This is because, from a certain age at operation, uncomfortable with spending leaks and repairs off a pass pipe be significant, offsetting being replaced by a new one. Under conditions very favorable exposure over the lifetime is estimated as follows economic periods for different pipe materials:

• About 20 to 25 years for PVC pipes (reaching up to 45 years);
• About 12 to 18 years for galvanized steel pipe with fittings of malleable iron galvanized (but currently only about 8 to 10 years in certain locations);
• Over 80 years for copper pipes with copper connections / bronze when exposed to water not aggressive.

Pipes with materials more recent production technology, such as CPVC (chlorinated polyvinyl chloride), crosslinked polyethylene (PEX) and random polypropylene (RPP) have not yet reached age sufficient for use in the economic evaluation of the shelf life, per hour for them estimating durability similar to that of PVC.

In old buildings can be exchanged with all the advantages plumbing?

Generally widespread replacement of pipes of a building is more difficult passages embedded in masonry and within channels and recesses of floors in buildings equipped with recessed slabs, construction technology peculiar constructions performed until the mid 70s.
That's because this substitution, in most cases, involves breaking tiles, ceramic floor tiles and hydraulic, whose replacement is very difficult to do satisfactorily, given the scarcity of identical parts in so-called 'tiles museums.' Moreover, the cost of implementation is high and therefore generally run embedded in walls and floors of bathrooms, kitchens and laundries.

There are more favorable situations, where much of the horizontal lodges inside false ceilings of gypsum, which is easy access for replacement and repair is fast and inexpensive. Another favorable situation is one in which vertical tubes run inside ducts appropriate, technically known as shafts, simply remove the lid to have full access to the pipeline.

You can not just replace the pipe obsolete, damaged or corroded by another of the same or different material, considered more durable. It is crucial to understand the causes of degradation and especially whether the new replacement pipe material have adequate durability under local conditions. This one only accredited professional and expert can determine, from the elaboration of a specific technical advice or a full technical report.

You must also comply with the technical characteristics of the installation and peculiar to each type of piping material such as maximum hydraulic pressure that will be placed and the hydraulic resistance of each material to the liquid flow.
For example, to replace an old galvanized steel pipe with a new copper, it is possible that many passages can run with diameters smaller than the original pipe, with equivalent performance, and sensible economy. This is because the plastic tubes and copper pipes offer less resistance to flow than the steel pipes.

For this it is necessary to elaborate a simplified design reform of hydraulic building because it involves calculations technical expertise that only a trained professional is able to do, with legal guarantee its liability CREA, according to current legislation, through issuing an ART - Technical Responsibility.

Therefore, the decision of replacing a hydraulic pipe obsolete should be taken only with the advice of a professional. This is because other factors must be evaluated at this time in favor of the building, as the possibility of changing the system discharge toilets.

Replacing the old flush valves for sanitary bowls with dump boxes embedded or coupled, which require tubes with diameters much smaller than the existing one can obtain economy running of pipes and further reduction in the monthly consumption of water in building up to 40 which will help amortize the costs over time.

Also in this opportunity should be evaluated technical and economic feasibility of installing individual meters of potable water consumption for the apartments (individual water meters), for the assessment of internal monthly expenses of the condominium with water in proportion to consumption effectively checked each unit condominium.

What kind of material should be used for the replacement pipe of the building?

The building does not require the same type of material for all hydraulic and sanitary. The choice, in addition to life expectancy, must take into account the purpose of the pipe, the nature, pressure and temperature of the liquid drained (hot water, sewer, ...), the best type of joint (thread, solder ring rubber, ...) and exposure conditions (apparent pipe, embedded, ....), among other factors.

The metal tubes historically were first produced on an industrial scale and, therefore, have performance well known. There are more employees in the building installations carbon steel pipe with threaded connections of malleable cast iron, both usually hot dip galvanized (galvanized), and copper pipes soldered connections with copper and / or threaded bronze / brass. Were recently introduced in the market semi-flexible tubes of aluminum coated internally and externally consists of a plastic layer.

The metal tubes generally have the following advantages:
• High resistance to internal pressure;
• Low thermal expansion feature;
• Dimensional stability;
• High heat resistance;
• High mechanical strength;
• Highly resistant to the effects of mechanical and thermal fatigue;
• Resistant to prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation and the ravages of time;
• Eliminate low smoke and toxic gases when under combustion;
• Increased reliability performance information under prolonged use;
• Are non-combustible at temperatures typically reached in fires in buildings.

However, metal tubes have the following disadvantages or inconveniences:
• High thermal conductivity;
• Greater weight comparison;
• Less easy handling,
• Greater difficulty implementing threaded or welded joints;
• Increased hydraulic resistance to flow;
• Low flexibility and elasticity;
• Less safe in the joints;
• High acoustic transmission (noise);
• Higher relative cost of acquisition;
• susceptibility to corrosion;
• Easier to accumulation of corrosion deposits, suspensions and precipitation;
• Possible contamination of water by corrosion debris and lead present in welds;
• Greater ease of transmission of the effects of water hammer.

The metal tubes are especially suitable for use in functions which are subjected to high pressures, such as the network pipe of fire hydrants and discharge piping, leading drinking water from the hydraulic pump to the reservoir tank of the high building. They are also used in high buildings to take drinking water from the reservoir to the high pressure reducing valves.

Copper pipes are especially suited for driving in hot water because of its chemical stability and dimensional. Galvanized pipe and fittings are very susceptible to corrosion when the water temperature inside exceeds 50 ° C. Already have brown PVC pipes sharp drop in pressure resistance and lead to huge thermal expansion hot water, and in consequence contraindicated in these cases.

Copper tubes also have an advantage over steel pipes in the building networks for distribution of fuel gas, since the welded joints permit higher sealing while avoiding the hazardous spills, and are not subject to chemical attack constituent material of mortar in the presence of moisture, where embedded in slabs of subfloors. This gives very high copper tube life, despite its cost is nearly twice the cost of steel and up to four times the cost of plastic tubes.

Moreover, the plastic pipes comprise a variety of components manufactured from synthetic organic polymers, obtained mainly from petrochemical derivatives.

The most commonly used plastic materials are PVC (or polyvinyl chloride), the PPR (polypropylene or random), CPVC (chlorinated polyvinyl chloride or) and PEX (cross linked polyethylene or crosslinked). Plastic tubes generally have the following advantages:

• High resistance to corrosion or oxidation;
• Good durability when sheltered from the ravages of time;
• Low thermal and electrical conductivity;
• Low weight comparison;
• Ease of handling;
• Fast and easy implementation of the joints (joints require hot termofusor);
• Low flow resistance;
• Little accumulation of debris;
• Good flexibility and elasticity;
• Increased security in the performance of gaskets (exempt employment torch);
• Low acoustic transmission;
• Low relative cost of acquisition.

However, plastic tubes also have the following disadvantages or inconveniences:
• Low resistance to heat;
• Low mechanical strength;
• Low resistance to the effects of mechanical and thermal fatigue;
• degradation due to prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation;
• High thermal expansion unit;
• Elimination of smoke and toxic gases when under combustion;
• Poor performance information under prolonged use (not more than 40 years of use in the domestic market).

PVC pipes have been widely used in building distribution networks for drinking water, and building facilities for sewage and rainwater collection. In contrast, CPVC pipe and PPR are specially designed for conducting hot water.

What is an Out of Place Artifact?

What is an Out of Place Artifact?

By Mark W. Medley

One day during a routine dig at the ancient Indian burial site, an archaeologist called Goddard, discovered one of the most famous out of place artifacts currently known, "a silver Norwegian coin," dating back to the reign of Olaf Kyrre, who ruled Norway between 1067- 1093 AD.

[caption id="attachment_919" align="aligncenter" width="500"]What is an Out of Place Artifact? www.whatis.website-site.com-112 What is an Out of Place Artifact?[/caption]

This to many people may not sound strange or improbable, but the Indian settlement was in the USA, and is the only Norse pre-Columbian artifact found in the USA. Raising more questions, than answers, especially about speculation that Norsemen traded with Indians, long before Columbus "discovered: the Americas in 1492.

Out of place artifacts also have been found in the Dead Sea. When ancient Roman trading ships were discovered on the bottom of the sea, their cargos still intact, Chinese-style vases were seen amongst the perfectly preserved cargos. Raising the question, whether ancient Rome traded with Imperial China.

Many of today's great thinkers, who are trying to bridge a link between our past, and present often search for out of place artifacts,- as a way to re-evaluate our traditional view of history.

Other less orthodox thinkers see out of place artifacts as proof that we really do not know that much about our past, and consider some OPP-Art discoveries, like the "Baghdad Battery," as proof ancient civilizations were more advanced than we thought.

The "Goddard Coin," may not be absolute proof that Norsemen discovered the Americas before Columbus, but we can only imagine what the next mystery that challenges our orthodox view of history is- once another out of place artifact is discovered.

What is a Distro?

What is a Distro?

By Mark W. Medley

Unlikely young entrepreneurs have created a new successful business modal, despite rising odds against the success of opening an untried business in 2010. A business that has low overheads, needs little financing and catches the feel good mood of the most price wary consumer- a Distro.

[caption id="attachment_910" align="aligncenter" width="500"]What is a Distro? www.whatis.website-site.com-109 What is a Distro?[/caption]

A "Distro," attracts customers from all walks of life- especially fashion conscious customers under 24, who are more likely to be unemployed or short of available cash in our current recession. Following a simple, low cost business plan, which relies on good will rather than mass marketing.

Imagine a cafe owner facing the prospect of closing down their business because of a decline in customers, add a recently graduated designer, and an IT student looking for extra cash. All are facing a grim future unless something changes, and the change could be a Distro.

A cafe owner allows an unemployed designer to utilize a space in his cafe, and she sells her own designer T-Shirts and jeans- all created at home. In turn the cafe, and her designs are promoted on the web by an IT student on eBay, and social networking websites. As the cafe  re-invents itself to attract an increasing trade of customers, with free wi-fi, "trendy" music and a chill out atmosphere, to become a distro.

"Distros" are springing out everywhere, particularly in urban areas, where you can shop, meet friends, surf the net and even get your own designer t-shirts created. An idea brought on by the need to survive and thrive in an unsure economy, through cooperation, and creativeness.

Another important reason distros are doing well, is the simple fact they do not have huge set-up costs, which often lead to a loan. No real investment is needed- except the re-design or improvisation of the cafe, second hand machinery to create the clothes, and an old laptop linked to the net.

Despite the fact many retailers are still closing, distros are saving creative designers from an unemployment office, cafes from closing, and students from dropping out of college. All negative factors when governments are looking for new ways to trim costs, and would rather people initiative self-help schemes to help kick start their economies.

A distro could be a new innovative business of the future, as shopping turns into a more personal experience, benefiting people instead of brands, and at the same time creating new entrepreneurs- who are creating new sustainable businesses rather than facing the prospect of long term unemployment.

What is a Conspiracy Theory?

What is a Conspiracy Theory?

By Mark W. Medley

2011 is the year where official ridicule of conspiracy theorists has become the language of many of our current leaders, and n important keyword in many reports from our official media. What really is a conspiracy theory?

[caption id="attachment_893" align="aligncenter" width="500"]What is a Conspiracy Theory? www.whatis.website-site.com-104 What is a Conspiracy Theory?[/caption]

Our official history has always had an alternative view or theory behind recorded events. Many of these events, such as the fall of civilizations, and the reported deaths of known leaders, could be labelled a 'theory,' or sometimes a 'conspiracy theory.'

In the age of the internet, where independent ideas can now freely be expressed, away from the confines of the official media. Many experts argue that opinions, and questions become a conspiracy theory- if they simply differ from the official version of events.

In the past, this would be called, asking questions, which is part of living in a true democracy. If someone dies mysteriously for example, and there is an obvious lack of transparency or burden of proof in the official version of events. Then it can leave unanswered questions, which in turn often turn into a 'conspiracy theory.'

Our age is full of such theories from the death of Kennedy, and the golden bullet' theory, to who attended "bunga bunga" parties with the Italian Prime Minister. Each theory could be based on an unanswered question or lack of transparency in the official version of events.

2011 has been an extraordinary year, given that there is a lack of questioning by the official media, and often those who govern us have been caught misleading us in the past. One example were the Weapons of Mass destruction- which was the official reason for the Iraq war, but never were found.

Sometimes when we are expected to believe our leaders, who in the past have been known to 'spin' or even misrepresent the truth, this just encourages new conspiracy theories, which are attacked as being nutty to stop any real questioning of events.

To ask probing questions about a statement or for complete evidence is not being a conspiracy theorist, but simply accessing an event. One reason some conspiracies are based on facts, but usually evolve into a grand theory, based at some point on missing evidence, a truth or a statement without any complete truth.

In reality as long as there is a perceived lack of trust in those who are supposed to represent the truth, conspiracy theories will continue. And as the way we view history always changes as our societies naturally move into the future - sometimes what may be the official truth today, could easily become the fiction of the future.

What is Sustainable Development?

What is Sustainable Development?

By Mark W. Medley

Imagine a pristine forest, untouched by humankind's hand, the natural eco-system regenerates itself sustaining the different life forms that live inside this unique environment, without harming the living environment. This in essence is sustainable development where the system regenerates, without harm.

[caption id="attachment_883" align="aligncenter" width="512"]What is Sustainable Development? www.whatis.website-site.com-101 What is Sustainable Development?[/caption]

In our current world this simply means what we use, is recyclable or reusable without needing to upset the true balance of the environment. Bottles are recycled, car parts are broken and reused for other purposes, and in economic terms a healthy monetary environment guarantees enough for all, but within certain constraints.

Energy is the key to creating a sustainable society, because fossil fuels cannot be reused, and once extracted and used- irreplaceable. In a society dependent on these fuels, societies are unsustainable, and in the long term face great change, unless an alternative resource is found. One reason sustainable development involves the usage of energies that either can be recycled, reused or simply never ending like solar or wind powered energy.

The way we live within a society, work and accept the limitations of the resources around us, are also a major contribution to a sustainable society, like a living forest that functions around nature, rather than develops quickly but enviatably declines. This means the characteristics of a sustainable society, are of one that nurtures natural energies, whilst develops around the environment it lives in.

Evidence of societies that are sustainable are in our history, the plains Indians survived in the pristine plains of North America, along with the buffalo and wolf packs. This balance was upset with the slaughter of these tribes in the 19th Century, and coincided with the extinction of the buffalo and wolf population. Some say this extinct society was primitive, but evidence shows that it survived thousands of years, whilst the society that replaced it currently faces a development crisis, only one and a half centuries later.

There are few sustainable societies in the 21st century, however some like Brazil, are more sustainable than other countries. Brazil imports little oil, yet runs its transport systems on alternative resources such as palm oil. Eco-friendly cities are slowly developing around nurturing the environment, rather than exploiting it- with the consequences of a booming economy.

Sustainable development in a nutshell, is where society can develop and provide enough for everyone,, without the need to use irreplaceable and often harmful resources to keep it going. A great challenge to the 7 billion plus people that now live on our planet.

Discover how you can survive and thrive during a period of economic change.

What is a Monocultural Society?

What is a Monocultural Society?

Most experts agree that the essential traits of a mono-cultural society are a common heritage, belief structure, language and usually a mono-racial identity. Since we live in a more globalized World, many of our societies are essentially multi-cultural. But still many of today's societies still share the common traits of a mono-cultural society.

What are these common traits?

1. A common heritage

The historical heritage of the society could be based on a perception that the nations, food, language, attitudes, racial features and religious beliefs are an essential element to the nations identity.

2. A shared belief structure

The majority of the citizens of a country have a shared belief structure, based on the nation's heritage. These beliefs form the national identity, and 'psyche,' which create to many a stronger bonded society, but to detractors a nation which loses out on the benefits of a multi-cultural ethnic society.

3. An inward looking 'psyche'

To many, mono-cultural societies tend to look inwards, rather than outwards, and this can show in the nation's culture. Television programs and news tends to be locally centered, and the cultures identity heavily promoted. A degree of ignorance of the outside World is often a product of looking inwards.

4. A suspicion of "foreigners"

The 'psyche" of a mono-cultural society often can be suspicious towards "foreigners," and unacceptable of their beliefs. This could lead to discouraging multi-cultural partnerships, to a 'ghetto' mentality of separating cultures through the areas they can live.

5. Common religious values

Whilst in some societies religion is seen as being less important, other cultures see it as part of their national or ethnic identity. A strong mono-cultural official religion often is a strong trait of a this type of society..

6. Tribalism

Citizens of strong multi-cultural societies tend to be more tribal when they live outside their own culture. Multi- cultural marriages are unacceptable, the neighbors, the food and even the workplace tends to be 'tribal." - the influence of the new society lessened by this strong cultural bond, between others who share it.

7. Purchasing Goods

Mono- cultural societies tend to support their own products, rather than purchase products from other nations. They tend to be proud of their industries, and economic achievements- encouraging buying nationally produced products over others. This is beneficial in a recession, but in an expanding economy can hinder the choice consumers have.

Mono-cultural societies tend to feel safer, as long as you are identified as "one of the group," but also conservative when it comes to accepting change. Whilst threatened, these societies tend to bond together faster, but also can be guilty of the worse types of ethnic abuse.

Historic examples could be the Armenian holocaust by Turkey, or the past bloodshed in the Balkans, and Rwanda- Events that generally do not occur in more modern multi-ethnic societies, which accept the differences in ideas, and beliefs.

Recessions often create a more mono-cultural outlook in societies, were suddenly even in multi-cultural societies fault lines can appear- often in the guise of competition for jobs and economic rights. However despite economic hardship, without the color, music and openness of a multi-cultural society- we would live in a very dull and limited World.

Discover how to Adjust to Change in an economic crisis, as we approach a new decade of global uncertainty.

What is Philosophy?

What Is Philosophy?

By Robert A Sopher

"What is Philosophy?" is an easy question to ask but philosophy is not something that is very easy to define. Literally it means "the love of knowledge" but this fails to capture much of the sense of the word. In many ways philosophy is about questioning and understanding the world but also it is about how we view the world. By using the methods and process of philosophy and by learning to love the search for knowledge we can find some of the worth and meaning of philosophy. Nothing else is quite as important and as overlooked as philosophical thought.

[caption id="attachment_35" align="aligncenter" width="500"]What Is Philosophy? What Is Philosophy?[/caption]

As a field philosophy is unique. Rather than building on its self like most realms of study, the history of philosophy and philosophy its self are one and the same. Philosopher's works are very rarely are usurped by more modern text; instead modern text seek to understand and interpret the works of past philosophers and, if refinements are present they are found more commonly as alternatives rather than replacements. Throughout this long history philosophy has had thinker that were more influential than others. Plato, Aristotle,Thomas Aquinas, Rene Descartes, Francis Bacon, Spinoza, Locke, Hume, Kant, Rousseau, and Nietzsche are perhaps some of the most important philosophers. These men and women have contributed and advanced many thoughts and ideas to a variety of fields of philosophy and to this day much of their work is study and analyzed by modern philosophers.

Another thing philosophy is know for is having a lot of "-isms". It is true that philosophers have created many terms to categorize and describe their philosophy, in many ways the archaic terminology is necessary to cover the breadth of ideas philosophers yield. To cover the most important ones briefly:

  • Skepticism - The philosophy and practice of doubting. Typical doubts include Epistemological skepticism, Moral Skepticism and Religious

  • Empiricism - The philosophy that people learn only by experiencing the world.

  • Rationalism - The philosophy that at least some things are knowable outside of experience

  • Idealism - The philosophy that the world exists only as thought or in someones mind

  • Materialism - The philosophy that in some sense a physical world does exist

Others include Existentialism, Aesthetics and Aestheticism, Realism, Pragmatism and Positivism.

Philosophy is also typically divided in two main ways: by area of study, and whether the philosophy is analytic or continental. The primary fields of study within philosophy are typically broken down into the following 4 groups:

  • Metaphysics - the philosophical study of being,

  • Epistemology - the philosophical study of knowledge,

  • Ethics and Aesthetics - the philosophical study of value, and

  • Logic - the philosophical study of correct reasoning.

Each of the fields has evolved greatly over its history and contains many niches and nuances unique to it. The bigger difference is in the analytic vs. continental divide. The difference is complicated but to put it simply: Analytic philosophy focuses on on logic and rigor and is typical of the English speaking world, where as Continental philosophy is usually done on Continental Europe and covers, with much less rigor, a very wide variety of philosophers.

I guess to fully answer what philosophy is in a few short sentences might be impossible.Philosophy covers, at least to some extent, all areas of human knowledge and any kind of definition you would give to it would far from do the subject justice. To truly understand the spirit of philosophy nothings helps more than learning, thinking, and philosophizing. To quote Plato - "Wonder is the feeling of the philosopher, and philosophy begins in wonder."
